What is CBT-E?

The leading evidence-based outpatient treatment for eating disorders in adults — personalized to how your eating problem actually works.

CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) was developed specifically for eating disorders. Rather than treating a diagnosis off the shelf, it starts by building a personalized map of what keeps your eating problem going — strict dietary rules, binge-restrict cycles, compensatory behaviours, and self-worth that has become tied to shape, weight, and control over eating.

Treatment then targets those maintaining mechanisms directly, in stages: establishing regular eating first, then addressing the concerns about shape and weight, the rules, and the events and emotions that drive episodes.

It is a genuinely collaborative treatment. You are never dieted, policed, or put on a meal plan against your will — the work moves at a pace agreed between us, with the mechanisms, not the willpower, as the target.

How it works

  1. Build the map

We create a shared picture of exactly what is maintaining the eating problem — yours, not a textbook's.

  2. Stabilize eating

Regular eating comes early, because most other mechanisms feed on chaos and restriction.

  3. Target what maintains it

Shape and weight concern, rules, mood-driven episodes — addressed directly, with relapse prevention built in.

CBT-E can help with

  • Binge eating
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • OSFED and atypical presentations
  • Binge-restrict cycles
  • Eating concerns after bariatric surgery or on GLP-1s

I provided CBT-E for many years across eating disorder presentations, including with post-operative bariatric surgery patients. It anchors much of my eating disorder work.
